Top Family Travel Products and Services
We use several hotel/flight/car rental websites when planning our family travel. Usually, we check at least two sites for comparison. We have found that in the US using hotels.com is cheaper than booking.com for most hotel reservations. However, when looking for hotels in Europe, the prices on Expedia and Booking.com tend to have better deals. All links below.
Hotels.com – When booking hotels in the US, we primarily use hotels.com. Prices seem better for North American locales. Plus, they have an excellent rewards program and fantastic customer service.
Booking.com – When searching for hotels and rental cars in Europe, booking.com seems to have the best rates. They have a wide selection of properties not always available on hotels.com or Expedia. The website is easy to use, and most of the booking options give you the ability for no-penalty cancellation up to the booking date, something that hotels.com doesn’t always offer (without charging extra). Use our affiliate link and get €15 off your first night’s stay.
TripAdvisor – We neglected TripAdvisor for many years. Recently, while living in Europe for a period of time, we
found that it was actually one of the most reliable sources of reviews online. We created an account and have posted our own reviews now to help other travelers! We didn’t realize they also act as a search engine across multiple sites, showing you the prices for several engines at once! This saves time, which we could all use more of!
AirBnB – One way to save money on family travel adventures is to stay in AirBnB’s. If you plan to stay in the same place for more than 2 nights, these apartments, flats, homes, rooms, etc. are often a better deal. You have access to a kitchen to cook meals in, saving money. Hosts also often share firsthand knowledge of cities with you, resulting in a more ‘local’ experience on your trip. Here’s a $40 coupon on your first stay!
Skyscanner – This flight search tool is the mecca of international flights. We have found the best flight options and prices on this site for more than a year now. The search tool allows you to filter results by direct only options, specific carriers, trip duration, and more. With little ones, trip duration is often a big consideration, and we will gladly pay a little extra for a shorter layover or a direct flight. Skyscanner lets you find the best option and then links you to the agency for booking and payment. We always check here first when booking flights.
BONUS: If you don’t know where you want to go, but know the month and duration of the trip, you can use their Explore option to find travel deals to places you might not have thought of!
Sixt Car Rentals – In Europe, we’ve found Sixt to be the most reliable for family travel. They are not the cheapest, but their fees include unlimited mileage and good insurance. We had an incident during one of our rental where we were unable to open the gas tank to refill prior to our return of the vehicle (luckily we didn’t run out of gas while on our trip!). We left a kind note in the car upon return after hours explaining the issue we had with the gas tank operation and they did not charge us for a full tank. They only charged for the gas used to fill up (their rate was cheaper than in town)! We thought this was very accommodating. In the US, we like Budget for our family travel.
Top Budget Products and Services to Save Money and Help Boost Your Family Travel Opportunities
Emeals – Several years ago, my husband was diagnosed with Celiacs, an allergy to gluten. Today, people have actually heard of this autoimmune disease. More and more food manufacturers, restaurants, and bakers are coming up with options for those with this allergy. Though ingredients are now more readily available, it can still be difficult to come up with creative, delicious meals on a daily basis. Our solution is Emeals.
This service has many meal plan options from paleo, vegetarian, vegan, low carb, low calorie, standard, and more. You simply select the size of your family, the meal plan you’d like to try (you can change any time), and they do the rest. Each week, they deliver you 7 new, healthy meal recipes including an entree and a side with the easy-to-follow recipe. You choose the meals you want to make each week, and the app creates a personalized shopping list saving you time and money! This meal planning service has easily saved our family about $200 per month on our grocery bill! In addition, the meals are easy to make and delicious.

Dave Ramsey – We have followed the Dave Ramsey system for many years now. His methods have helped us to pay off all our debt and finally experience financial freedom, enabling our family to travel more. Though he doesn’t sugar coat things, sometimes it’s the wake-up call you need in order to get in gear and on the right track. His book, Total Money Makeover is a must-read for those who don’t know where to begin.
